  1. Sand media wears out gaskets
  2. Expensive & inconvenient cleaning cycle
  3. Backwash discharge water
  4. Will not remove fine particles or algae

Diatomaceous Earth Filters

Diatomaceous Earth Filters

Strengths

  1. Removes fine particles, even algae clusters, to 5 microns

 

Weakness

  1. Many Parts, must be assembled
  2. Complex cleaning procedure
  3. The dirty diatomaceous earth is not environmentally friendly
  4. High maintenance
  5. Diatomaceous earth is harmful to breath

  1. Simple to operate

  3. Removes fine particles, even algae clusters as small as 7 microns
  4. Low maintenance

 

Weakness

  1. Expensive to manufacture
  2. Must be careful not to undersize

Materials Supplies

  1. 100 to 600 gallons of water
  2. 50' to 80' of backwash hose
  3. Ecological safe drain area
  4. Permits required in some cities
  5. Garden hose to refill

General Procedures

  1. Locate suitable dump area
  2. Roll out backwash hose
  3. Turn valve to backwash
  4. Observe backwash flow (100 to 600 Gallons) until water begins to clear
  5. Stop filter, turn valve on filter to waste, start and run for 1 to 2 minutes
  6. Allow filter to settle for 10 to 15 minutes
  7. Roll up backwash hose
  8. Periodic use of a filter cleaning chemical will be required
  9. Fill pool back up with water after depletion during backwash

Materials & Supplies

  1. Lined plastic garbage can
  2. Rubber gloves & scrub pail
  3. Stiff acid proof brush
  4. 10% muriatic acid for periodic dip cleaning
  5. 5 gallon pail for periodic dip

General Procedures

  1. Unbolt and remove dirty grid or finger cluster from the filter tank
  2. Suspend dirty grid or finger cluster over garbage can and wash off dirt and expended D.E.
  3. Use brush to remove earth clogged between grid or fingers
  4. Pour off a smuch water as possible and seal bag of contaminated earth
  5. Dispose of bagged earth in an ecologically sound manner
  6. Re-Assemble grid or finger cluster in tank
  7. Acid dip and brush as required
  8. End of season give acid bath

  1. Garden hose and 20 gallons of water

General Procedures

  1. Hand spin quick lock tank ring and remove cartridge element
  2. Rinse off cartridge element
  3. Replacve element and spin on quick lock tank ring
